When it comes to toddler tooth care, it’s easy to assume that more toothpaste means a cleaner mouth-but with little ones, less is actually more.
If you’ve ever stood in the bathroom holding your 2-year-old’s toothbrush and wondered, “Is this too much?“-you’re definitely not alone. At your local Children’s dentist near Columbia, Smiles4children is here to help guide you to a healthy smile!
According to both the American Dental Association (ADA) and pediatric dental experts, a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice is perfect for kids under 3 years old. Yes, really that small!Â
Toddlers can’t spit well yet. Most 2-year-olds will swallow at least some toothpaste, and swallowing too much fluoride can cause a condition called fluorosis, which can affect their developing teeth.Â
Small mouths, small doses. Their tiny teeth don’t need a lot of paste to get the job done. It’s more about technique (and consistency) than quantity.Â
Use a soft–bristled, age–appropriate toothbrush.Â
Apply a smear of fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice.Â
Brush twice a day-once in the morning and once before bed.Â
Focus on all surfaces of the teeth, even if your toddler only has a few.Â
Gently brush their tongue too to help remove bacteria.Â
• Help them brush-kids don’t have the coordination to do it well themselves until around age 6 or 7 or sometimes older.Â
We know brushing a toddler’s teeth isn’t always smooth sailing. Try:Â
• Singing a song while brushing (a 2-minute timer song is great!).Â
Letting them pick their toothbrush or toothpaste flavor.Â
• Brushing your teeth at the same time to model the habit.Â
• Making it a fun ritual instead of a chore.
